The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials. The primary function of the lymphatic system is to transport lymph, a fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells, throughout the body.
Lymphatic drainage therapy, also called lymphatic massage or manual lymph drainage, is a technique that was originally developed in Germany for treatment of lymphedema. Our lymph systems are blocked by so many pollutants these days, that lymph drainage is now applicable in so many other situations. Air pollutions, improper nutrition, emotional stress, drugs, injuries, surgeries, tight fitting clothing, electro-magnetic pollutions (wireless devices, cell phones), noise and light pollution and heavy metal all congest and decrease the flow of lymph fluid through our bodies. The lymph techniques are gentle rubs, strokes, taps or pushes that follow the natural flow of the lymph channels.
The benefits of lymph drainage include increased fluidity, decreased swelling and bruising, decrease of acute or chronic pain, decreased toxicity, and decreased emotional and mental tension.
In addition to the above benefits, lymph drainage therapy gives a boost to individuals on the autism spectrum by addressing their central nervous system and systemic inflammation. Improved mood, increased communication and humor, less repetitious and stimming behaviors are all possibilities once the lymph system is working smoothly and efficiently.
